Rep. DeBolt statement on vote to improve budget transparency

Rep. Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis today issued the following statement on an amendment to improve budget transparency:

“The House today took a small step toward improving budget transparency for the public, but we should have gone further. We introduced two amendments that would have required state budgets be available to the public for either 72 or 48 hours prior to a final vote of the House.  The Democrats held firm on maintaining the current 24 hour amendatory process, which simply doesn’t provide enough time to review a sizeable document like our state budgets.

“I don’t want the Legislature to be an institution of secrets, I want this to be an institution of solutions.  The public has felt shut out of the process in the past and they want to have a say in the important decisions that affect them. We must not forget this is the people’s house. They should have ample time to review and provide input on a budget before the House takes a final vote on a bill that spends their hard-earned money.”
